Most poker variants have a betting interval. The betting interval is a break in the deal that allows a player to raise or check. Once the interval has concluded, the dealer distributes the next set of cards to all players.

During a pot-limit game, the maximum amount of money a player can bet or raise is usually determined. However, a player may make a bet or raise that exceeds the limit. This allows a player to speed up the process.

The aforementioned bluffing game, called Pochen, was popular in Germany in the 16th century. Today, many variations of the same game are played in homes, clubs, and casinos.
